The towing number on a truck brochure is the theoretical maximum — a lightly loaded truck, a 150 lb driver, ideal weather and no cargo. The real number you can safely pull is lower, often a lot lower, once you add passengers, fuel, gear and a safety margin. Real towing capacity starts with two numbers stamped on your truck: GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, the most the loaded truck can weigh) and GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating, the most the truck plus trailer plus everything in both can weigh).
