Commute Fuel Cost Calculator

At a typical $3.50/gal, a 15-mile one-way commute (30 miles round trip) driven 5 days a week for 48 weeks is 7,200 miles a year. In a 25 MPG car that is about 288 gallons, roughly $1,010 per year, or about $5,040 over five years. The U.S. average regular gas price was about $4.06/gal in August 2026 (AAA), so most commutes cost more — enter your real local price, MPG and schedule to see your number.

VehCalc provides estimates only. Commute fuel cost depends on your actual distance, driving days, vehicle efficiency, real gas prices and conditions, all of which vary. This is not financial advice — verify with your own odometer readings and current local prices before budgeting.

How It Works

Annual commute miles = one-way distance × 2 × commute days per week × commute weeks per year. Divide by your vehicle's MPG to get gallons used, then multiply by the gas price. The tool adds any extra non-commute miles you enter to show your full annual fuel bill, and breaks out the monthly and five-year commute totals so you can plan.

Why Commute Fuel Cost Matters

Fuel is one of the few car costs you pay every single week, and it scales directly with your commute. A longer drive or a less efficient vehicle quietly adds hundreds of dollars a year versus a shorter trip or a higher-MPG car. Comparing your commute fuel cost against a more efficient vehicle or a shorter commute is one of the fastest ways to cut recurring car spending.

Ways to Lower Your Commute Fuel Cost

  • Drive fewer miles: combine errands, carpool, or add remote days to cut commute weeks or days.
  • Improve efficiency: keep tires inflated, reduce idle time, and remove roof cargo that hurts aerodynamics.
  • Choose a higher-MPG vehicle: even a small MPG gain saves meaningful fuel over a 5-year commute.
  • Watch the price: track local stations and fill when your area is below the AAA average.
