How Florida Calculates Car Sales Tax in 2026
Florida's motor vehicle sales tax statute (s. 212.05, F.S.) imposes a 6% state rate plus a discretionary sales surtax of up to 1.5% adopted at the county level, producing the 7.0% state-population-averaged combined rate shown. Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties all charge the full 1.5% discretionary add-on for a combined 7.5% within county limits. In every FL county and city, the dealer collects the tax at time of sale via the retail installment contract or bill of sale, then remits to the Florida Department of Revenue on the buyer's behalf โ typically within 15-30 days. If buying from a private party, the buyer remits the tax in-person at the DMV/County Assessor office at time of title/registration.

Trade-In Credit Rule in Florida (2026 Statute)
Florida allows a FULL trade-in credit against the 6% state + county discretionary surtax combined base. $15,000 trade against $40,000 purchase = tax only on $25,000, saving $1,050 at the 7.0% average rate. The dealer must itemize the trade value on DHSMV Form HSMV 82050.
