Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between GVWR and GCWR?+
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) = max weight of truck + cargo + passengers. GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) = max weight of truck + trailer + everything. Payload = GVWR - curb weight. Tow capacity = GCWR - (curb + passengers).
Do I need a CDL for my truck?+
CDL required if: GVWR ≥26,001 lbs, GCWR ≥26,001 lbs (with trailer >10,000 lbs), hauling hazmat, or 16+ passengers. A Ford F-350 (GVWR 14,000) towing 12,000 lbs = 26,000 GCWR, just under CDL threshold.
What weight class is my truck?+
Class 1: <6,000 lbs GVWR (compact). Class 2: 6,001–10,000 (half-ton). Class 3: 10,001–14,000 (one-ton). Class 4–5: 14,001–19,500 (medium). Class 6–7: 19,501–33,000. Class 8: >33,000 (semi).
How is towing capacity calculated?+
Tow capacity = GCWR - (curb weight + passengers/cargo). A truck with 17,000 GCWR, 5,500 curb, 600 passengers = 10,900 lbs max towing. Always verify against manufacturer's rating.
Can I exceed my truck's payload capacity?+
No—it's unsafe and illegal. Overloading causes: brake failure, tire blowouts, suspension damage, handling issues, and liability in accidents. Insurance may deny claims for overloaded vehicles.
